Lately, I've been really focused on self-care. Being a mom and wife is my absolute joy, but I've realized I can't fully embrace either without prioritizing myself. My mind felt so cluttered and thin, making daily life chaotic. I snapped at loved ones, my tone sharp. My thoughts raced endlessly, leaving me restless. That's when self-care hit me—right when I started lashing out at my husband and losing patience with everything.
At first, I tried small things just for me. But sitting down to watch Netflix or do my nails brought intense guilt. It consumed me. I couldn't shake it, feeling compelled to do something else. What an exhausting cycle! Guilt is manipulative; it steals from you. It makes you feel like a bad mom or wife for putting yourself first, even briefly. Even just once a day, prioritizing myself felt uncomfortable.
Every woman's self-care looks different. For me, it needs two things:
Time with my Bible, soaking up God's word. I didn't realize how much I was missing until I finally opened my journal and Bible. I truly missed my time with Jesus; my last journal entry showed how long it had been. Since making devotions a top priority, my clarity of mind has returned.
Dedicated time for my craft: my writing, my passion. Working towards my few but significant goals is also crucial. I'm ambitious; I crave work and creativity.
Moms, taking care of yourself is so vital. I'm new to this, but I'm quickly realizing I need time for myself. Not just "mommy time," but time for Judhit. Not "wifey time," but time for the individual I was before marriage and a baby. The one who chases Jesus, who wants to write and publish, who loves to work out, who sets and achieves goals, who is fearless and pushes boundaries.
My husband needs me. My baby needs me. I need me too.
So, please, make time for yourselves, mommies. Rebuke the guilt about constant cleaning, laundry, dishes, and more laundry. Quiet your mind. Reconnect with yourself. Read, or don't. It doesn't matter. Set aside at least 30 minutes a day just for yourself. For your heart. For your mind.
Read your favorite novel.
Pamper yourself with a massage, pedicure, or both!
Exercise. Walk or bike.
Take a nap.
Go shopping and treat yourself.
Binge-watch your favorite Netflix show.
Write down your goals and dreams.
Join a fitness class with a friend. Get out of the house.
When your husband gets home, grab some wine and unwind.
Call your girls for a night out!

After class or a performance, your pointe shoes will be damp from sweat. To ensure their longevity, never leave wet pointe shoes in your dance bag.
As soon as you get home, remove your shoes from your bag. Proper drying allows the internal glue, softened by moisture, to re-harden. It can take 24 to 36 hours for shoes to dry completely.
Always loosely wind the ribbons around each shoe after use to help maintain their shape. For added support during drying, insert crumpled newspaper or a paper bag into the shoe. Some dancers prefer to place the paper inside a plastic bag before placing it inside the container.
Absolutely! Various shellacs and glues are available to help prolong the life of your pointe shoes. Popular options include:
Polyurethane
Super Glue (Jet Glue)
Floor Wax (Future)

We arrived at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. These rooms are huge, thankfully not needed for us, but designed for many medical staff. We were fortunate to have no more than four people in our room at a time. The view was amazing—palm trees are my weakness! We moved Joey from the stretcher to the Intensive Care crib. Confined, Joey is a force, like an alligator being wrangled. Superimposing Joey’s face on that alligator gives an accurate picture.
They hooked Joey up to monitors to recheck his glucose levels. He'd been poked too many times to cooperate. Good news: his glucose held steady at 75! We administered Gatorade and IV fluids to him for hydration. Bad news: Joey hated the intensive care crib. I'd planned to stay the night, and they'd set up a bed for me. I signed papers so Joey could sleep with me. We moved him to the bed, and he immediately calmed. Needless to say, I felt loved.
My husband arrived with Cody, our oldest, to say goodnight. We asked the nurse about Joey's symptoms. All she said was we were in the best place—an Intensive Care Unit. That hurt more than I can say. My husband kissed us goodnight; Cody promised to help. They left for home. We settled in with "Despicable Me," which I'd never seen (cute movie!). The night, however, was anything but restful.
Like anyone in a hospital, we woke up every few hours for vital signs and glucose checks. Joey maintained a stable glucose level all night! My only complaint: Joey was so hydrated he soaked the bed... with me in it! I was too happy my boy was returning to normal to even care.
By morning, Joey was bouncing off the walls, wanting to be disconnected. He desperately wanted out of bed! No such luck yet. It was breakfast time! Joey ate his entire plate of French toast, eggs, and bacon, plus most of mine! He was apparently starving.
The doctor came in and discharged him, stating there was no reason to keep him in the hospital. I was concerned and confused. The doctor offered no answers, just that it could have been a fluke or Joey might have Type 1 Diabetes. He simply said to watch him closely and walked out. I sat in shock. How could they discharge us without knowing the cause? I still have no answers for this.
My husband and Cody picked us up in utter shock. No words were spoken, just thankfulness that God had given us another day together. With a swipe of my pen and a brief description of hypoglycemia as a suspected diagnosis, we were out the door and on our way home.

I know, I know. Another mommy post on the post-baby-bod.
Some of you might think, "Whoa, too much, put that away." But I've got to be real: I'm not embarrassed or scared to show my imperfections. I started this blog to be real, honest, and raw, so that's what I'm doing. I might not like my imperfections, but I can still acknowledge and discuss them. If this picture truly makes you uncomfortable, feel free to scroll away! That's the beauty of the internet.
I look at my body and don't see anything I love. I admire it, but I don't necessarily love its look. I have saggy skin and love handles (less loving, more loving? I'm not sure). And saaaaaggy boobs—these bad girls need help! Oh, and that mommy pooch most of us know well.
My stretch marks don't bother me. I've never said they're my battle scars or tiger stripes out loud, but they make me feel strong. I look at them and admire my body, thinking, "Yo, you did THAT." You carried a child for nine whole months and pushed her out. Girl, you're poppin'.
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." — Psalm 139:13
That verse blows me away. We have the honor of being the womb where God knitted a child. Phew! The inward process is remarkable, but the outward process can become a little rough. It leaves us looking like we've been through a war, because we've. I'm not in love with that part—saggy skin, a pooch, thighs that only fit a size nine. I'm not in love with that, and I don't want to be. I know many moms might tell me to accept and love my body for what it created. To see myself as a warrior who birthed an eight-pound child. And I am in love with my body, this machine that can give birth to babies and do so much more. But because I'm in love with it, I have to take care of it. I have to lose my pooch and at least most of my saggy skin.
I'm not content with how my body looks now, because I know it can be so much more. I haven't even scratched the surface of what this body, built by God for great things, can do. I don't just want to lose weight with a fad diet that wouldn't work anyway. I want to be healthy! I want to be strong! I want to run with my kid without tons of breaks. I want to cook nutritious meals for my husband, daughter, and me to live healthy lives. I want the best. I need the best.

Here, there, 50-plus sisters! As a lively woman in her 50s, I want to talk about something crucial for our vibrant second half: bone health during perimenopause. This transition, starting anywhere from your late 30s to 40s and lasting for years, marks the gradual decline of estrogen.
Estrogen is a bone's best friend, regulating bone turnover. As it dips during perimenopause, bone loss can accelerate, increasing osteoporosis risk. Additionally, lower estrogen levels can lead to achy, "creaky" joints, as they impact cartilage and inflammation.
But don't despair! We can empower ourselves through natural remedies and powerful movement:
Calcium-Rich Foods: Go beyond dairy with leafy greens (such as kale and spinach), fortified plant milks, tofu, sardines, and chia seeds.
Vitamin D (D3): Essential for calcium absorption. Get some safe sun, and consider fatty fish, fortified cereals, eggs, and an OTC supplement.
Magnesium: Vital for bone formation. Find it in nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and dark chocolate.
Vitamin K2: Guides calcium to your bones. Look for it in fermented foods (natto), certain cheeses, egg yolks, or as a supplement.
Prunes: Consuming just a few a day can have a positive impact on bone density.
Beyond what we eat, how we move is equally powerful for our bones! Weight-bearing exercises, such as lifting weights or using resistance bands, are highly beneficial. When you lift weights, whether it's dumbbells, kettlebells, or even just your own body weight, you're putting stress on your bones. This "stress" signals to your body that your bones need to be stronger to handle the load, leading to increased bone density. Similarly, resistance bands provide tension against your movements, engaging your muscles and, in turn, stimulating bone growth. Incorporating these into your routine a few times a week can make a significant difference in building and maintaining strong bones.
Most importantly, consult an OBGYN skilled in menopause and perimenopause. They can assess your individual risk, pinpoint your perimenopause phase, and discuss all your options, from dietary tweaks and supplements to hormone therapy, ensuring your bones stay strong for all your future adventures!

We all know that staying hydrated is a huge part of feeling our best, but there's more to it than simply drinking glass after glass of Water. While the classic "eight glasses a day" rule is a familiar starting point, our actual needs are much more personal. Since it's not a one-size-fits-all situation, finding your own hydration sweet spot is key. Here are a couple of easy ways to get a more personalized estimate:
The Body Weight Method: Take your body weight in pounds, divide it by two, and aim to drink that many ounces of fluid daily. For example, a 150-pound person should shoot for about 75 ounces.
Check Your Urine: The goal is to keep your urine a pale, lemonade-like color. This is a great real-time indicator that you're on the right track with your fluid intake.
Factor in Your Lifestyle: Remember that your needs can fluctuate based on your activity level, the climate you live in, and your overall health.
But what if you're just not a fan of plain Water? The good news is that many other beverages and foods can also contribute to your daily fluid intake goals. When you're tallying up your daily intake, remember to count these hydrating helpers:
Beverages: Unsweetened teas, milk, and even your morning coffee can add to your intake.
Water-Rich Fruits: Many fruits are packed with Water. Watermelon, strawberries, and cantaloupe are all composed of more than 90% water.
Hydrating Vegetables: On the vegetable side, cucumbers, celery, and lettuce are fantastic hydrating options.
Soups and Broths: These are an excellent way to boost your fluid levels while getting in some extra nutrients.
While staying hydrated is crucial, especially during the hot summer months, it's also possible to overdo it. Drinking excessive amounts of Water in a short period can lead to a dangerous condition called hyponatremia, where sodium levels become diluted. To stay safe and hydrated, especially in the heat, keep these tips in mind:
Pace Yourself: Sip fluids consistently throughout the day rather than chugging large amounts at once.
Pre-hydrate: Before heading out into the summer heat or starting a workout, drink a glass or two of Water.
Replenish Post-Activity: During and after your time outside or exercising, continue to sip Water. Consider a sports drink to replenish lost electrolytes if you've been sweating profusely for an extended period.
Keep Water Handy: A simple trick for any hot day is to carry a reusable water bottle and take regular sips, even before you feel thirsty.

When my father, Ruppert Blaize, relocated to Austin four years ago, the intention was for him to settle into a well-deserved retirement. He left behind an incredible legacy in Florida, where he was affectionately dubbed "Mr. Clearwater" after a standing gig that lasted over 30 years at the iconic Shephard's Beach Bar. He had a vibrant life there, but our family couldn't bear the distance. He graciously made the move to Texas to be near us. For a short while, it seemed his days on stage were over, until one Sunday afternoon. At the invitation of friends, we attended a performance by Pamela Hart and the Women in Jazz. We were all impressed, but my father, a lifelong musician, was utterly mesmerized by Pamela's talent and presence.
That initial spark of admiration led to a decision. We were so captivated by Pam's performance that we invited her to sing at our home for a family Christmas Eve gathering. The evening was magical, filled with the soulful sounds of jazz in an intimate setting. It was in that moment, surrounded by family and inspired by the music, that a new chapter began. My father saw a path forward and asked Pamela to become his manager. It was a pivotal turning point, marking the official beginning of the second half of his storied musical journey, this time with roots firmly planted in Austin.
This new venture is built on a foundation that has been in the making for over five decades. My dad's career began on the beautiful island of Antigua with his first album in 1966, "Don't Pick the Flowers Children." A master of various genres including Calypso, Reggae, Jazz, and R&B, he has released numerous albums such as "We Caribbean Family" (1967), "Give A Little Love" (1972), and "Perfect Lover" (1988). His work has produced concert favorites like "Tampa Bay Weekend" and "Antigua." In 2008, his influence extended to the world of diplomacy when, as Antigua's Ambassador of Trade and Commerce, he was commissioned by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer to write "Mount Obama" to commemorate the renaming of a mountain. He performed the song for dignitaries, including actress Angela Bassett. Now, he looks forward to becoming part of the vibrant Austin music community, bringing a lifetime of experience to a new stage.

So, let's talk about perimenopause, that transitional period right before menopause. For me, that wild ride started when I was about 46, when your body's estrogen production begins to gradually decline, and the symptoms can feel pretty unpredictable.
First off, let me just say, this whole thing is so different for every woman. Honestly, your journey might feel like a gentle breeze or a total whirlwind, and that's both normal and okay.
The reason for all of it is that your hormones, especially your estrogen levels, are just fluctuating like crazy. They're trying to figure out where they want to be before they eventually decline.
For a lot of us, the most obvious sign is our period. It can become a complete mess—showing up at random, getting heavier or lighter, or just skipping a month entirely. It's a key sign, trust me.
And then, of course, there are the famous hot flashes and night sweats. You know, those sudden waves of intense heat where you just start flushing and sweating out of nowhere.
Sleep becomes a whole other challenge. It can feel impossible to fall asleep or stay asleep, and honestly, those night sweats certainly don't help.
Don't even get me started on the mood swings. The hormonal shifts can lead to so much irritability, anxiety, and even feeling a little down. It's tough.
Another thing that happens is a decrease in estrogen can cause vaginal dryness, which can make things really uncomfortable, you know?
And as if all that wasn't enough, you might also get headaches, joint pain, bladder issues, memory problems, or a lowered sex drive. It's a lot to deal with, but you're not alone.
Finding trusted resources is a crucial step in navigating your perimenopause journey. Here are some reliable websites that provide comprehensive information and support.
The Menopause Society (formerly NAMS): This organization offers science-based information from experts. Their patient education resources cover everything from symptoms and treatments to locating a certified menopause practitioner near you.

If you lived through the '80s in New York, you didn't just wear clothes; you made a statement. I remember being a dancer in Brooklyn when the world seemed to turn into one giant stage. We were all chasing that Fame dream, channeled through the legendary Debbie Allen. Suddenly, the gear we used to keep our muscles from seizing up in drafty studios became the "it" item for every closet from Flatbush to the Upper West Side.
Beneath the neon yarn and the slouchy aesthetic, there’s a surprisingly practical heart beating in those footless socks. Let’s dance through the history and the "why" of this cozy staple.
While we associate them with the 1980s, leg warmers were born out of necessity rather than vanity. They were originally engineered for professional dancers. The goal was simple: keep the lower leg muscles warm to prevent cramping and injury during the "down time" between rehearsals.

Oh, honey, I hear you. The hustle is real, and juggling a business, a child, and your own sanity is a balancing act that deserves a standing ovation. Taking your little one to a photoshoot for your dance company? That's a day that's going to test every ounce of your patience and creativity. But trust me, it's absolutely doable, and you'll get through it.
Here are a few tips I've learned over the years that can help you not just survive, but maybe even enjoy the day.
Pack an "Emergency" Kit: This isn't just for scrapes and bruises. Think snacks, and I mean all the snacks. The ones they love, the ones that take a while to eat, and a few secret treats for when things get really hairy. Pack a small cooler with drinks and any items that need to stay cool.
Bring Entertainment: This is key. Have a bag dedicated to toys, books, and activities. Something they haven't seen in a while works wonders. If they're old enough for a tablet, load it up with movies or games, but make that the very last resort. You want them to be able to enjoy the day without being completely glued to a screen.
Change of Clothes: For you and for them. You never know when a stray juice box or a messy snack will suddenly appear. It's so much easier to have a fresh outfit ready to go than to be sticky and uncomfortable all day.
Lower Your Expectations: This is the most important tip of all. The day won't go perfectly. Your child might have a meltdown right before a critical shot. A snack might end up on a leotard. That's life. The sooner you accept that, the less stressed you'll be. Your goal is to get the shots you need, not to have a tranquil, serene day.
Delegate, Delegate, Delegate: If you have a trusted friend, family member, or even a responsible teenager you can hire for a few hours, have them come along. Their only job is to be the "kid wrangler." This will free you up to focus on the dancers, the lighting, and all the details that make the shoot a success. If that's not an option, don't hesitate to ask for help from a team member. Most people are more than happy to lend a hand for a few minutes.
Give Them a "Job": Kids love to feel important. Give your child a small task they can handle, like being the "water bottle manager" or the "snack-time announcer." Even something as simple as holding a reflector or counting how many times the photographer takes a picture can make them feel included and keep them engaged.
